Caravan insurance is usually separate from your car insurance, and policies vary a lot. Instead of telling you which to buy, here are the questions worth asking every insurer.
Questions to ask
- Agreed or market value? Agreed value is a sum set when you take out the policy. Market value is worked out at claim time
- Is the caravan covered while being towed, parked at home and stored?
- Are contents covered, and up to what limit? Are items like bikes, solar panels and electronics included?
- Is annexe and awning damage covered, including storm and wind damage?
- Is legal liability included? For example, if your van damages someone else's property
- What about emergency accommodation and transport if the van is damaged far from home?
- Are there exclusions for remote areas, unsealed roads or off-road use?
- What happens if the rig is overweight or not maintained? Check the PDS for conditions
- What's the excess, and does it change for different claim types?
- Who does repairs, and how does it work if you're interstate?
Car insurance and roadside assistance
Check separately whether your tow vehicle’s policy and your roadside assistance cover towing, and what happens to the caravan if the car breaks down. Roadside plans differ on caravan recovery and remote-area limits.
Keep records
- Photos of the van and contents, serial numbers and receipts
- Policy numbers and claims phone lines (there’s a space on the emergency card in our Checklist Pack)
- Renewal dates, so cover doesn’t lapse mid-trip
RAC’s pre-trip checklist reminds caravanners to check the PDS and TMD and keep insurance renewal dates handy (RAC).
